Cutting Methane Emissions in the Global South

Recycle Organics is an international initiative that supports countries in the Global South in taking concrete action to reduce methane emissions from organic waste.
Accelerating waste management projects to mitigate climate change

Methane is one of the greenhouse gases that contributes most to global warming, and its management is potentially one of the most effective ways to curb the climate crisis and reduce air pollution.

Led by ImplementaSur and CCAP, the programme started in Chile in 2017 and has operated in 25 countries globally. It supports the implementation of the NDCs, the Global Methane Pledge and the COP29 Declaration on organic waste.

Approach and Impact

The program is built on a systems-based methodology that ensures both immediate and lasting results. We advance regulatory frameworks to accelerate investment, develop project pipelines ready for execution, design climate finance strategies and business models, and create effective incentive structures.

We provide technical assistance to governments, municipalities, and local organizations; promote peer learning across countries in the Global South; and strengthen capacity through educational materials and an active community of practice.

ImplementaSur’s Strategic Vision

Recycle Organics highlights our ability to implement large-scale climate programs with both regional and global reach, leveraging international funding to support local project implementation.

As the program’s technical lead, we work with donors such as Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), and the Global Methane Hub to scale our expertise. We bring technical know-how, public policy insight, and on-the-ground experience to help turn global commitments into real, measurable local impact.

Recycle Organics began in Chile in 2017 under the name Reciclo Orgánicos, with a focus on helping municipalities recover value from organic waste. In 2022, it expanded to Latin America, and in 2023, to other regions in the Global South. Its growth reflects not only the program’s climate potential, but also the strength and adaptability of the model we’ve developed.
Between 2025 and 2026, Recycle Organics aims to mobilize $2.5 million to expand its network of participating countries. The program is focused on financing the execution of existing project pipelines, replicating and scaling successful local initiatives, and extending its impact to new countries.
