ImplementaSur

Facilitated Emissions Quantification

The project quantified facilitated emissions in capital markets, aligned with PCAF. ImplementaSur supported Bci in developing the methodology and calculation tool, expanding its climate measurement scope and strengthening its position as a benchmark in climate transparency and management in Chile.

Service Facilitated Emissions Quantification

Year 2025-2026

Approach and Project Implementation

The project focused on the quantification of facilitated emissions, understood as those associated with activities that a financial institution enables through the structuring and placement of financial instruments, even when there is no direct balance sheet exposure.

According to the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF, 2023) standard, these emissions reflect the climate impact linked to a bank’s intermediation role in capital markets. While still an emerging practice and not currently a regulatory requirement in Chile, it represents an important step forward in climate management by expanding the scope of measurement beyond traditional financed emissions.

ImplementaSur supported Banco Bci in the methodological design and development of a calculation tool aligned with PCAF, building on prior work related to its first financed emissions assessment. Through this process, Bci positions itself among the first banks in Chile to quantify facilitated emissions, strengthening its leadership in climate measurement and transparency.

The exercise expanded the bank’s understanding of its impact on the real economy and enabled a more comprehensive view of emissions linked both to its on-balance-sheet portfolio and its intermediation activities, consolidating its role as a national reference in the implementation of international climate management standards within the financial sector.

Strategic Vision

The work with Bci is strategic due to its pioneering role in the early adoption of advanced climate metrics within the Chilean financial sector. Supporting institutions that lead these processes helps strengthen the uptake of rigorous, standardized methodologies that improve financial decision-making and position the sector to play a more active role in the decarbonization of the economy.
