Strategic Focus on Mining and Climate

Mining is a critical sector for the energy transition, but it faces growing environmental and social demands. At ImplementaSur, we support mining stakeholders in developing climate strategies grounded in technical rigor. Our services combine technical knowledge, local context, and public policy insight to help advance more sustainable, resilient operations aligned with the realities of climate change.

Hoja de ruta de gestión de residuos

En 2023, acompañamos a BHP en la elaboración de su hoja de ruta 2023–2030 para la gestión de residuos en sus operaciones en Chile y Canadá. El trabajo incluyó el análisis de antecedentes, la definición de criterios y métricas de circularidad, la priorización de iniciativas y la estimación de trayectorias de valorización y reducción, alineadas con los objetivos corporativos de sostenibilidad de la compañía.

Waste Management Roadmap

In 2023, we supported BHP in developing its 2023–2030 waste management roadmap for operations in Chile and Canada. The process included background analysis, the definition of circularity criteria and metrics, prioritization of initiatives, and projections for waste recovery and reduction aligned with the company’s corporate sustainability goals.

Methodological Approach

Each advisory process combined evidence-based research, territorial analysis, and multisectoral participation, contributing to the implementation of measurable solutions aligned with BHP’s climate, community, and sustainability goals.

Nature-Based Solutions

We developed a technical study on nature-based solutions (NbS) in Chile, identifying typologies, opportunities, and barriers to implementation. The work also included mapping priority areas with favorable conditions for scaling up NbS, and identifying social and environmental co-benefits, particularly those linked to local communities.

Climate-Resilient Communities

We supported the implementation of BHP Minerals Americas’ Climate-Resilient Communities Program. The project involved characterizing target communities and their critical infrastructure, facilitating participatory workshops, defining adaptation measures, and designing the social investment strategy. This initiative aims to enhance local adaptive capacity to climate impacts by integrating climate considerations into BHP’s broader community engagement strategy.
