ImplementaSur

A Common Language for Sustainable Finance in Chile

Since 2021, Chile has been advancing the development of a Taxonomy of Environmentally Sustainable Economic Activities, led by the Ministry of Finance. As part of the Coordinating Level, ImplementaSur has supported the process from design through implementation, bringing technical expertise and facilitating stakeholder engagement to help align investments with the country’s climate and sustainability goals.

The taxonomy aims to guide investments toward a more sustainable, resilient, and transparent development pathway that reflects Chile’s climate commitments.

Service We coordinated the technical development of Chile’s first climate taxonomy.

Year 2024 - 2025

Approach and Project Implementation

We coordinated the work of chairpersons and review groups across the nine priority sectors defined by the taxonomy:

  • Agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fishing
  • Mining and quarrying
  • Manufacturing industries
  • Electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply
  • Water supply; wastewater, waste management, and remediation activities
  • Construction
  • Transportation and storage
  • Information and communications
  • Real estate activities

We worked in close collaboration with key stakeholders across the public, financial, and technical sectors, contributing technical rigor, international experience, and strategic insight to develop a taxonomy aligned with global standards.

Our role included facilitating the technical development of evidence-based eligibility criteria, grounded in scientific analysis and the “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) principle, in line with the European Union taxonomy.

ImplementaSur’s Strategic Vision

This project reflects our commitment to strengthening frameworks that drive sustainable investment in the Global South. At ImplementaSur, we help build systems that are technically sound, robust, and legitimate, empowering the financial sector to play a meaningful role in climate action.

The development of taxonomies is critical for channeling resources toward priority sectors in the low-carbon transition. Our work underscores the importance of tools that are both globally aligned and adapted to Latin American contexts, backed by deep technical expertise and strategic vision.

Strategic Value for the Country

The taxonomy will help align financial flows with Chile’s climate and sustainability commitments, supporting structural transformation based on clear, objective, and technically robust criteria.
