BAC Latam: Decarbonizing Financial Portfolios in Latin America

Since 2022, ImplementaSur has advised BAC Latam on several projects as part of its journey toward portfolio decarbonization. We have calculated financed emissions, set science-based reduction targets, strengthened internal capacities, and designed client engagement strategies and green financial products. Our support has spanned operations in six Central American countries, applying international methodologies such as PCAF and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), adapted to the region’s and the bank’s specific sectoral contexts.

Service Measuring, planning, and managing financed emissions in the financial sector

Years 2022–2024

Approach and Project Implementation

We measured financed emissions in the commercial lending, housing, and vehicle segments of BAC’s portfolio using PCAF methodology and additionality criteria. We designed reduction targets aligned with SBTi, and for vehicle loans, we tailored methodologies using International Energy Agency (IEA) scenarios and local policy frameworks.

We trained technical teams, developed educational capsules, and segmented clients based on their sustainability maturity. We also proposed green financial products aligned with BAC’s internal taxonomy to encourage investments that support climate change mitigation.

Strategic Vision

Our work with BAC is part of a broader track record supporting financial institutions on their transition paths toward Paris-aligned portfolios. We bring a systems approach that connects science, climate action, and commercial strategy, strengthening internal capacity and delivering practical tools to support investment decisions.

Our approach is tailored to diverse institutional contexts and stages of progress. At BAC, this vision has translated into concrete steps to integrate climate into risk management and identify financial opportunities.
