Over three days, our team—together with a wide range of stakeholders, from financiers to beneficiaries—will be discussing, among other topics, the importance of incorporating MRV schemes for accurate accountability, how to design ambitious projects aligned with national priorities, and how to leverage financing to implement such initiatives.
This week, our team is in Florianópolis, Brazil, taking part in the regional workshop “Deepening Impact, Expanding Action in SIDS” of the Recycle Organics Program. The event brings together representatives from national and local governments, technical experts, and strategic partners to reflect on progress made and to work together on the next stage of climate action in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
In our role leading and implementing the program, together with CCAP and with the support of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), we celebrate this space as a key milestone. It allows us to consolidate lessons learned, highlight major results, and look ahead to the future.
A Shared Horizon with the Global South
As an organization rooted in Latin America with a clear mission to drive climate action across the Global South, we have witnessed first-hand the value of South-South cooperation: building partnerships among countries with similar challenges and contexts, and the mutual learning that emerges from these experiences.
Since its beginnings under the name Reciclo Orgánicos, the program has served as a platform to turn organic waste into climate solutions—particularly crucial in SIDS, where high vulnerability to climate change is a daily reality, and where implementing technically robust waste management systems is critical.
Between 2020 and 2025, our team has supported six SIDS—Belize, Fiji, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Lucia, and Samoa—in developing locally tailored solutions to reduce methane emissions, improve public health, and advance toward a more circular economy. This work has ranged from delivering composters and biodigesters, to designing national emissions monitoring protocols and public policy frameworks.
At ImplementaSur, we bring a long track record in the waste sector. Our expertise combines technical rigor, local sensitivity, and a long-term strategic vision. Over the years, we have supported more than 25 countries across the Global South in identifying, designing, and implementing effective organic waste management projects.
Our services in this field include:
Technical and economic analyses for mitigation and adaptation projects
Business models and green financing schemes, including links with carbon markets
Regulatory diagnostics and the design of public policies, instruments, and sectoral plans
Development of project pipelines and engagement with local communities
Educational materials and technical training for governments, companies, and social organizations
The Future: Turning Commitments into Implementation
Methane is responsible for nearly half of current net global warming, yet less than 2% of global climate finance is allocated to its reduction. In recent years, commitments have multiplied—such as the Global Methane Pledge—but it is urgent to turn those commitments into concrete actions: implemented projects with measurable, traceable results.
Since 2017, Recycle Organics has mobilized over USD 13.5 million and is currently seeking to leverage at least an additional USD 2.5 million by 2026 to implement solutions in countries where project pipelines are already developed. Achieving this requires partnerships, financial innovation, and political will.
From Florianópolis, we reaffirm our commitment to this agenda. Through Recycle Organics, ImplementaSur continues working to connect stakeholders, mobilize resources, and support processes that accelerate climate action from the local level. The direction is clear: reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and advance toward more circular, just, and sustainable economies.
